PVD coating

PVD is the abbreviation for physical vapour deposition and refers to an extremely modern coating method by means of which a material, for instance gold, can be transferred to your choice of steel or titanium workpiece in vapour form. The result is as fine as it is durable: PVD is resistant, corrosion-resistant and very hard.

316L stainless steel

The 316L stainless steel, which Certina uses for cases, bracelets and clasps for instance, is extremely resistant, corrosion-resistant and hygienic. It contains only a very small proportion of nickel, which is not emitted when worn and therefore does not trigger any nickel allergies.

Antireflection treatment on one side

It is possible to enhance the quality of a sapphire crystal to an even greater extent by providing it with an anti-reflective coating on one or both sides. The Certina brand is becoming increasingly focussed on equipping its timepieces with an extremely high-quality anti-reflective coating on both sides, whereby several layers of this coating on both sides of the crystal ensure that it is possible to see through the timepieces in an optimum manner.

Sapphire watch crystal is made of aluminium oxide power (Al2O3) heated to over 2000 °C. The resultant sapphire nugget is cut with great precision into fine slices, trimmed and polished. Sapphire is extremely scratch-resistant, shock-resistant and is very transparent. This is why sapphire crystal is an essential element in the DS Concept and is therefore used by Certina in all of its models to protect the dials.

Water resistance

Up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 m)

This information about the water resistance states the specified overpressure and diving depth to which a watch can be subjected and still remain in working order. As a general rule, we do not recommend wearing watches that are water-resistant to less than 10 bar (100 m) when swimming or diving. All Certina timepieces can withstand a pressure of at least 10 bar (100 m) stand - some of our watches can even withstand considerably higher pressures!

SLN is the acronym for Super-LumiNova®, a phosphorescent luminescent material. The BG W9 type of SLN, used by Certina, emits the stored light in the form of a bluish glow in the dark. SLN poses no risk to health and is used to coat hands, indices and bezels. Its brightness decreases in the dark after some time, but it is automatically recharged when light strikes it.

Each chronograph is adorned with the tenth of a second: Selected Certina models visibly depict the tenth of a second in real time at 2 o'clock on the auxiliary dial - with ten increments per second. It is displayed when you press the push-piece, and stops automatically after one minute, while the chronograph continues to measure the time accurately down to a tenth of a second.

The name of an innovative technology which ensures the utmost accuracy at Certina: The timepieces with Precidrive(TM) quartz calibres achieve real chronometer precision. With a rate deviation of +/-10 seconds per year, a Precidrive(TM) timepiece is around eight to ten times more accurate than traditional quartz timepieces.

End of life

Some Certina quartz timepieces - and all Precidrive(TM) models without exception, whether a three-hand variant or a chronograph - have an end of life (EOL) indicator. It indicates that the battery has reached the end of its life: When this is the case, the seconds hand continues to move, but in four-second increments only, and the battery should be replaced within the next two weeks.

Super-LumiNova®

Super-LumiNova® (SLN) is a luminescent material with phosphorescent properties. In the dark, the SLN type BG W9 used by Certina emits the light stored as a blue shimmer. SLN does not damage your health in any way and is used in coatings on hands, indices and bezels. It progressively loses its phosphorescence in darkness, but automatically regains it under light.
